Gottaplay.com Open Maui WQE Holding Period Comes To A Close and Mother Nature Does Not Deliver

The holding period for the Gottaplay.com Open Maui WQE has come to a close and mother nature has made her decision. Due to lack of sufficient swell, there will be no APT WQE on Maui this season.

APT expresses their appreciation for everyone’s patience in the establishment of this year’s inaugural APT World Tour Tow-In Surfing Circuit. In an effort to display fairness to all registered teams, the APT created a qualified and unbiased committee that was tasked with selecting the next 8 teams who will be invited to compete in the Gottaplay.com APT World Cup Events to be held in Puerto Escondido, Mexico and Iquique, Chile between May 1st and July 31st.

The committee was comprised of recognized big wave industry professionals, photographers and leading opinion leaders. The committee voted and decided on the 8 teams that have advanced. The 8 teams that have been selected will compete with the 8 top teams that advanced from the Oahu event and selected wild card teams. An 11 team alternate list was also selected.

The committee made their selection from a list of APT registered competitors. Wild card slots have been filled by both World Cup Event promoters and approved by the APT. Those wild card names did not appear on ballot. Wild cards will be listed in first press release for each event.

The selection committee considered the following criteria in their decision:

• Competitive big wave experience
• History of performance in big waves, as a paddle surfer and tow-in surfer
• Recognition from peers and industry as an experienced waterman
• Team performance at first qualifying event on Oahu

Registered APT competitors that did not make the final list will be notified when the next WQ event is scheduled to take place. APT is currently developing a series of world qualifying events for 2008.
