Hawaii 'Ocean Safety Educational Course'
offered in Hawaii and California Scheduled Ocean Safety Educational Course meets requirements for licensing in the State of Hawaii Upon completion of this course participants will be familiar with the following: The legal and regulatory requirements for persons who participate in the sport of tow-in surfing in the State of Hawaii. Basic Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. Equipment commonly used in the sport of tow-in surfing. Guidelines for physical fitness training, using S.S.A.F.E. principals, commonly used by ocean safety professionals who perform high surf rescues in the State of Hawaii. Ocean Safety practices commonly used in high surf situations in the State of Hawaii using Risk Management Principals. U.S.C.G. boating skills and rules of the road as they apply to the sport of tow-in surfing. Commonly used safety procedures and in-water etiquette used by practitioners of the sport of tow-in surfing in Hawaiian waters. Endangered species in Hawaiian waters and Federal rules regarding these endangered species and boaters. Hawaiian cultural, social, and environmental issues and how they relate to the sport of tow-in surfing in Hawaiian waters. This course is recognized by the State of Hawaii, Department of Land and Natural Resource as sufficient to meet the requirements for tow-in surfing certification. Upon successful completion of the course and receiving a passing score on the course examination participants receive a Certificate of Professional Development from the University of Hawaii.

Instructors: Ken Bradshaw, is internationally acknowledged as a pioneer in extreme big wave surfing. Mr. Bradshaw has built a career by successfully surfing and tow surfing some of the biggest waves ever recorded. Mr. Bradshaw is an active Advisory Board Member of the Association of Professional Towsurfers and a NSBC Boating Safety Instructor. For more information go to www.kenbradshaw.com Jim Howe, is currently the Operations Chief of the City and County of Honolulu's Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division. Mr. Howe has been involved in ocean safety and ocean safety management since 1976. Jim is also a member of the Association of Professional Towsurfers. Archie Kalepa, is a personal rescue craft operator since 1992, is currently the Operations Chief for Maui County Ocean Safety. Mr. Kalepa is the personal rescue craft instructor for Maui County and has taught personal rescue craft skills to lifeguards in France, Taiwan, and California. Mr. Kalepa has been an active in tow-in surfing since 1998. Mr. Kalepa is an active Advisory Board Member of the Association of Professional Towsurfers Brian Keaulana, is one of the founders of Water Patrol, Inc., which provides ocean safety services to ocean event competitions and the film industry. Mr. Keaulana is internationally recognized for his use and development of the Personal Water Craft for ocean safety purposes. Mr. Keaulana is certified to instruct in field of Risk Management by the U.S. Army and is considered an expert in the field of ocean safety risk management. Brian is an active Advisory Board Member of the Association of Professional Towsurfers.
